The concept of THE MATH PARTY PROGRAM is research-based, and supported by a multitude of mathematicians and other theorists. Plato once said music is one of the most powerful and effective tools utilized in education. Music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking; it excites and builds the natural brain patterns, strengthening the ability to complete reasoning tasks that are complex. One of Gardner’s seven multiple intelligences is musical and rhythmic intelligence. When teachers model creative risk taking by integrating music and mathematics, students take risks by striving to achieve goals in mathematics that they once felt were unattainable. Songs with positive messages about mathematics help negate the anxiety and pessimism possessed by many students toward this subject.
BENEFITS OF THE MATH PARTY
Math and music, in many ways, have always been considered closely
connected; the infusion of the two offers benefits beyond general motivation
and mnemonics. THE MATH PARTY PROGRAM will:
• Teach skills aligned with the National Math Standards
• Expand vocabulary knowledge
• Enrich linguistic skills
• Increase self-esteem
• Improve test scores
• Create active learning environments
• Increase interest in learning mathematics
• Develop cognitive skills
• Enrich coping skills
• Facilitate self-expression
• Improve critical thinking and problem solving skills needed
RESEARCH FINDINGS OF THE MATH PARTY
An experimental research study was conducted to find the effect of
implementing THE MATH PARTY PROGRAM, as part of daily instruction
and home reinforcement (parental involvement), on student
achievement. Students did not use the program during year one.
During year two, the program was implemented and significant
learning gains resulted. The table illustrates National Percentile Scores
for both years, along with calculated percentile increases:
